Our Mission & Story
Woman’s Missionary Union of North Carolina (WMU NC) is an organization dedicated to inspiring and equipping Christian believers to live out Jesus’ command in the Great Commission: “Go and make disciples of all nations” (Matt. 28:19). We work toward a world where all believers own this calling and actively spread the Good News of Jesus through their communities and to the ends of the earth.
WMU NC’s resources, ministries, and training opportunities are designed to help believers of all ages
- Learn about missions,
- Pray for missions,
- Give to missions, and
- Do missions.
Challenging, preparing and equipping Christian believers to be radically involved in the fulfillment of the Great Commission.
Our opportunities generally fall under one of three categories: Missions Education, Compassion Ministires, and Leadership Development.
Missions Education
Missions Education is a crucial component of discipleship. Learning about missions and missionaries illuminates how many people need to hear the Gospel. Jesus called all believers to be missionaries, whether at home or overseas. Missions Education develops the ability to recognize everyday Gospel opportunities and to say “yes” when God calls us to GO.
Compassion Ministries
Jesus didn’t call believers to be spectators of missions. He called us to DO missions. WMU NC’s Compassion Ministries offer opportunities to do just that. Whether you or your church members want to pray for specific mission opportunities, donate money or items, or play a hands-on role in spreading the gospel by volunteering, WMU NC has something for you!
Leadership Development
WMU NC comes alongside women, equipping them to be leaders in their homes, communities, churches, and on the mission field. For women who have been in leadership roles for a long time and for those who are feeling the initial call to leadership, WMU NC has opportunities that will challenge, prepare, and equip women to do the good work God has prepared in advance for them.
Our Story
Woman’s Missionary Union of North Carolina (WMU NC) was founded in the late 19th century by Fannie Heck and Sallie Bailey-Jones. These two young women began their ministry in Raleigh, focusing on helping children in impoverished areas. In 1886, Fannie Heck was appointed chairwoman of the Woman’s Central Committee of Missions, the precursor to WMU NC. Under her leadership, the organization grew and continued to support and encourage mission work throughout the state.
Fannie Heck served as the president of WMU NC until her death in 1915. Over the years, WMU NC has expanded its outreach, education, and leadership programs, deeply embedding itself in communities across North Carolina. Today, WMU NC remains dedicated to challenging, preparing, and equipping Christian believers to be actively involved in missions.
